Laser pens as toys for cats?
We love the response we get from our young cats chasing a red dot that moves faster than many other toys we use for owner cat enrichment. However is there a dark side to the red dot? Many behaviorist have decided there is a major problem with this easy and exciting toy. For us to truly enrich cats indoors we should try to imitate the hunt cycle. The hunt cycle starts with sharpening the claws. Starting with dangling the toy over the cat scratcher helps them use that in preparation. Then proceed with allowing the cat to chase the toy as long as they seem interested. Then when they have caught the toy you reward with treats or food. The problem? The cat does not have the satisfaction of “feeling” like they caught the red dot. While most cats may accept praise words as the reward some cats are frustrated from repeated attempts and not feeling as successful.
